Skills are saved instruction sets that shape how the AI chat builds your apps. They activate when needed so the AI can follow your rules and best practices automatically across your workspace.

Ideas for skills

Use skills to give the AI specialized abilities for different kinds of work, such as:
  • Design skill: Help the AI think like a designer by applying layout logic, spacing rules, hierarchy, and component best practices as it builds your UI.
  • Copy skill: Help the AI focus on clear headlines, product descriptions, landing pages, and in-app text that match your tone and goals.
  • Data skill: Help the AI behave like an analyst, interpret metrics, spot patterns, and reason about decisions using your structured data.
The AI chat decides when to use a skill based on what you type and the skill’s description and instructions. The AI can invoke relevant skills automatically, but it usually works best if you mention the skill or its purpose directly in your prompt, such as “Apply our accessibility skill to this flow” or “Use our brand-guidelines skill for this page.” You can also type / in the AI chat to pick a skill yourself. See adding a skill or connector to your prompt.

Types of skills

There are 2 kinds of skills. You choose which one when you add a skill.

Workspace skills

Workspace skills apply to every app in the workspace, for anyone who can work in that workspace. Use them to keep design patterns, copy rules, and data practices consistent across your team. Everyone in the workspace can see the workspace skills, and the AI chat uses them in everyone’s chats. Only workspace owners and admins can add, turn on or off, edit, or delete them. Other members see the skills, but can’t change them.

Personal skills

A personal skill works like a workspace skill, but only for you. It appears in your skills list with a Personal badge, and the AI chat uses it only in your own chats, in any app in that workspace. Other members, including workspace admins, can’t see your personal skills. If a personal skill has the same name as a workspace skill, the AI chat uses your personal one. You can’t turn a personal skill into a workspace skill or the other way around. To change it, create the skill again with the other scope.
When the AI chat uses a personal skill, its instructions are added to that conversation, where other collaborators on the app can read them.

Adding a skill

You can upload a skill file, start from a template, or create a skill from scratch, and choose whether it’s a workspace skill or a personal one.
Who can add skills:
  • You need a Builder plan or higher to add skills.
  • Workspace owners and admins can add workspace skills and personal skills.
  • Editors can add personal skills only.
  • Each workspace can have up to 100 workspace skills, and each member can have up to 100 personal skills in it. If you reach a limit, delete a skill before adding a new one.
To add a skill:
  1. Click your workspace name at the bottom left of your account.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Under Build tools, click Skills.
  4. Click Add skill.
The Add skill menu open on the Skills page, with Upload skill file, Start from a template and Start from scratch

  5. Choose how you want to start:
    • Upload skill file: Upload a .zip or .skill file with a SKILL.md file at its root. The name, description, and instructions fill in from the file, so you can check them in the next steps.
    • Start from a template: Click Add on one of the preset skills.
    • Start from scratch: Create a completely custom skill.

  6. Under Scope, choose Personal to keep the skill just for you, or Workspace to share it with everyone in the workspace. If you’re an editor, the skill is always personal.

  7. In the Skill Name field, enter a short, recognizable name, such as brand-guidelines or checkout-copy-style.
  8. In the Description field, describe when the AI should use this skill. For example, explain which pages or tasks it applies to, or which team or brand it belongs to.
  9. In the Instructions field, add the step-by-step rules the AI should follow when the skill activates. Treat this like training a new team member, with clear headings, examples, and priorities.
  10. (Optional) Click Refine & Review to have the AI refine and adjust the skill description and instructions while keeping your intent.
  11. In the Review your skill window, compare the refined version with your original text:
    • Click Back to Original if you prefer your original version.
    • Click Save Skill to save the refined version, or Cancel to close the review window without saving changes.
  12. Click Add skill.

Turning a skill on or off

You can temporarily disable a skill without deleting it. When a skill is off, the AI ignores its rules during conversations. Workspace owners and admins can turn workspace skills on or off, and editors can turn their own personal skills on or off. To turn a skill on or off:
  1. Click your workspace name at the bottom left of your account.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Under Build tools, click Skills.
  4. Click the toggle on the relevant skill to enable or disable that skill.

Editing or deleting a skill

Update a skill when your guidelines change, or delete it if you no longer need it. Workspace owners and admins can edit or delete workspace skills, and editors can edit or delete their own personal skills.

To edit or delete a skill:
  1. Click your workspace name at the bottom left of your account.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Under Build tools, click Skills.
  4. Next to the relevant skill, click the More actions icon .
  5. Choose what you want to do:
    • Edit Skill: Open the skill editor to make changes. You can update the Skill name, Description, or Instructions, and optionally click Refine & Review again to have the AI improve your updates before you save.
    • Delete Skill: Remove the skill from your workspace.

Best practices for writing skills

Skills are static text. They cannot pull live data, check current conditions, or adapt based on what is in your app. For live data needs, use MCP connections instead. Skills influence AI behavior in the editor chat only. They do not enforce code standards, access controls, or data policies at the platform level.
  • Keep each skill focused on one concern. Skills for design, copy, data, and security are easier to maintain, toggle, and invoke precisely than a single broad skill that tries to cover everything.
  • Edit and update rather than delete and rebuild. As your standards evolve, update the skill’s instructions. Deleting and starting over loses your history and risks gaps.
  • Avoid complex conditional logic. Instructions like “if X then Y, but if Z then W” can produce inconsistent results. Keep rules clear and direct.
  • Mention the skill in your prompt for best results. The AI can invoke skills automatically, but being explicit (for example, “Apply the brand-guidelines skill to this page”) produces more reliable results.

When you delete a skill, the AI chat no longer uses its rules in any app in that workspace. You need to recreate the skill if you want to restore those guidelines in the future.
